Justine Triet

#

Born in Fécamp in 1978, Justine Triet is one of the figureheads of contemporary French cinema. A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts, Triet envisaged a career as a painter until she discovered the art of montage thanks to a class by a video artist, which led her to take a different path. Her first steps in filmmaking were in the documentary genre and had clear socio-political underpinnings, offering a visual commentary on urgent social injustice issues. Triet’s directorial debut was in 2007 with Sur Place, a short documentary shot during the student demonstrations, followed by Solférino (2008) which focused on the presidential elections. Five years later, Triet’s career took off thanks to La Bataille de Solferino (2013) her first feature film, nominated for Best First Feature Film at the 2014 César Awards. But it wasn’t until 2023 that the French director hit meteoric international recognition with Anatomie d’une chute, which won the coveted Palme d’Or – which made her the third woman to receive the prize in the history of the Cannes Film Festival. This gripping legal drama, directed by Triet from a screenplay she co-wrote with her husband Arthur Harari, has received numerous awards and nominations, propelling her career to new heights.
