Artistic director, curator, art critic and director of contemporary art institutions: Jérôme Sans has more than one string to his bow. Based in Paris, he is known internationally for his pioneering and creative approach to modelling cultural institutions and exhibitions. Most famous for co-founding the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 1999 with Nicolas Bourriaud and co-directing it until 2006, he established it as a new model for 21st-century institutions. He then served as the artistic director of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, UK, from 2006 to 2008, and as the director of the groundbreaking Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing from 2008 to 2012, where he helped to develop a new economy for the art centre. As he led art institutions, Sans didn’t forget to curate numerous major international exhibitions, such as the Taipei Biennial (2000), the Lyon Biennial (2005). In 2012 and 2013, L’Officiel Art entrusted him with the creative direction of the magazine, for which he was also be editor-in-chief. Since 2022, Sans has been the artistic director of LagoAlgo, a new living and cultural hub located in the heart of Mexico City’s Chapultepec Forest. Through his diverse and interdisciplinary career, Sans has consistently pushed the boundaries of contemporary art, fostering dialogues between local and international artists and audiences.
